Born in Melbourne, he started playing golf at age six with his father. They played at the same Queensland golf club where Greg Norman learned to play. Green turned professional in 1992 and joined the PGA Tour of Australasia the same year.
He has been a member of the European Tour since 1996, with his first win coming at the 1997 Dubai Desert Classic, where he became the first left-hander to win on the European Tour since Bob Charles at the Swiss Open in 1974. His consistent performances in 2004 took him to a career-best European Tour Order of Merit finish of 17th. That same year he won the MasterCard Masters, one of Australia's most prestigious tournaments, and topped the PGA Tour of Australasia's Order of Merit. In 2007 he won his second European Tour event at the BA-CA Golf Open in Austria.
Green previously held a share of the course record at Carnoustie with a 64, achieved in the final round of the 2007 British Open Championship. (This record was later beaten by Tommy Fleetwood, who shot a 63 at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in 2017.) The round saw him jump 27 places on the last day of the tournament to finish in a T-4th with Ernie Els.
Green played full-time on the European Tour between 1996 and 2018. He played in 466 European Tour events, making 296 cuts and 60 top-ten finishes. He earned Euro 10,011,468.
Green played in all four major championships and 13 World Golf Championships. In 20 majors, his best finish was T-4th in the 2007 British Open. He played in 43 PGA Tour events, and his best finishes were T-4th in the 2007 British Open and T-5th in the 1997 B.C. Open.
The KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship will be his first over-50 event.
A fanatical motor racing fan, he loves to race Porsches and competed in the 2009 and 2010 Australian Grand Prix GT Category. Among the cars he has owned in the past (and has since sold) are the Bathurst 1000-winning Perkins Engineering Holden Commodore and Perkins Engineering Chassis 027.
2022 Notes: Played in seven Legends Golf Tour events, winning twice at Jersey Legends and WINSTONgolf Senior Open. He was 9th in the order of merit. At the end of the year won the PGA Tour Champions Qualifying Tournament.
2023 Notes: He played in 26 PGA Tour Champions events and finished six times in the top ten. He was 12th in the Schwab Cup and 15th on the money list, earning $1,221,196. T-3rd at the Trophy Hassan II, six shots back of the winner Stephen Ames. T-4th at the Invited Celebrity Classic, two shots back of the Mark Hensby/Charlie Wi playoff. He recorded his first career top 10 in a PGA Tour Champions major with a T-7th finish at the Senior Open at Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in Porthcawl, Wales. Competing in severe wind and rain, Green tallied a 10-over-par 294 for the tournament. At the Ascension Charity Classic, he finished T-8th after closing with a 6-under 65. At the Dominion Energy Charity Classic, he finished 2nd after losing a playoff to Harrison Frazar, who won with a birdie on the first hole. His runner-up finish is a career-best. Played in four Legends Tour events and won the Jersey Legends.
2024 Notes: Played in 26 PGA Tour Champions events with ten top-ten finishes. Was 3rd on the Schwab points list and money list with earnings of $2,168,079. Posted a pair of 68s to finish T-7th at the weather-shortened 36-hole Chubb Classic. At the Trophy Hassan II was T-7th. At the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship, he opened with a 7-under 64, suitable for a share of the 18-hole lead. Closed with a final round 6-under 65 and five eagles on the week, finished 2nd at 14-under 270, three shots back of the winner Richard Bland. Finished 3rd at the U.S. Senior Open after rounds of 63-67-69-71. It was his second consecutive top-3 finish in a senior major after taking 2nd at the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship. Finished 2nd at The Senior Open Championship after shooting 69-72-68-71 at Carnoustie. Earned three top-three finishes in the five senior majors in 2024, shot 68-73-69 to finish T-8th at the Boeing Classic. In the Shaw Charity Classic, he shot a career-low 8-under 62, closed with a 2-under 68 to capture his third runner-up this season and fourth top-10 finish in his most recent five starts. Finished 2nd at the Sanford International, falling to Steve Stricker on the fourth playoff hole. Posted 68-65-69 for an 8-under total. It was his fourth runner-up finish of the 2024 season and fifth time overall, finishing 2nd on the PGA Tour Champions. Got his fifth 2nd-place finish of the season at the Charles Schwab Cup Championship. Carded rounds of 71-68-63-65 to finish one shot behind champion Bernhard Langer. Finished 3rd in the final Charles Schwab Cup standings.
2025 Notes: Played in 22 PGA Tour Champions events with six top-ten finishes. Was 16th on the Schwab points list and 17th on the money list with earnings of $1,260,766. He won the Rogers Charity Classic by a shot over Ricardo Gonzales. Was T-2nd at the Simons Bank Championship, seven back of the winner Steven Alker.
2026 Notes: Best finish T-10th at the Cologuard Classic.
