Peter learned to play golf at his father's nine-hole Himley Hall golf course and was taught by Sandy Lyle's father, Alex. Inspired by meeting with Seve Ballesteros on a trip to La Manga when he was 14 years old. Baker enjoyed an impressive amateur career, winning the Brabazon Trophy in 1985 and representing Great Britain & Ireland in the Walker Cup of that year.
After turning professional in 1986, he was an impressively consistent performer on the European Tour for over twenty years, with three tournament wins and the highest Order of Merit finish of 7th in 1993. He collected his first European Tour win at age 20 at the 1988 Benson and Hedges International Open. He won by making an eagle on the first hole of a sudden-death playoff, beating Nick Faldo. His next two European Tour wins came in the 1993 Dunhill British Masters, and he beat Anders Forsbrand in a playoff at the Scandinavian Masters. Later that year, Baker was part of the European Ryder Cup Team and showed his match-play prowess by beating Corey Pavin in singles; it would be Baker's most significant year in golf; he finished 7th in the order of merit with earnings of euro543,184.
Between 1993 and 2001, Baker maintained his high standards on the European Tour, but in 2002 He stumbled, finishing 125th in the order of merit. 2003 wasn't much better in 30 starts had his worst year, not finishing in the top ten (best finish T-24th Trophee Lancome) and finishing 126th in the order of merit. He held on to his card until the end of the 2004 season. After playing a vital role as Vice-Captain to Ian Woosnam at the 2006 Ryder Cup, he focused on relaunching his career.
Baker played on the European Tour between 1986 and 2015. He participated in 600 events, making the cut in 338 of them. He was in the top ten 56 times and earned euro 4,063,396.
Playing on the Challenge Tour in 2007, Baker won two events, the Credit Suisse Challenge and the Open AGF-Allianz Cotes d'Armor Bretagne, on his 40th birthday. He ended the year 12th in the order of merit. He returned to the European Tour in 2008 but finished 132nd in the order of merit. He did have a top-10, a T-9th at the Estoril Open de Portugal; it would be his last top-10 on the European Tour.
He played 600 European Tour events, making the cut in 338 and finishing in the top ten 56 times. He earned euro 4,030,829.
He joined the European Legends Tour in 2017, playing twice, T-7th at the Farmfoods European Senior Masters and 43rd at the MCB Tour Championship.
2018 Notes: In his first year on the Legends Tour, he played in 17 events with six top-ten finishes. T-4th at the Farmfoods European Senior Masters and The Shipco Masters. T-8th at the European Tour Properties Senior Classic. It was 25th in the Order of Merit with euro 94,455.
2019 Notes: He played in 15 Legends Tour events, with eight top-tens and his first win at the Senior Open Hauts de France. He was T-2nd at the Swiss Seniors Open, Scottish Senior Open, and 4th at the Paris Legends Championship.
2021 Notes: Played in 9 Legends Tour events with six top-ten. He was 7th in the order of merit; he earned euro92,568. His best finish was T-3rd at the Irish Legends.
2022 Notes: Played in 12 Legends Tour events with three top-ten finishes. He was 16th in the order of merit and earned euro86,946. Their best finish was T-2nd at the Irish Legends.
Still a resident PGA Pro at the South Staffordshire Golf Club.
2023 Notes: Played in 15 Legends Tour events with ten top-ten finishes. Baker claimed four Legends Tour wins. He won titles at the Irish Legends, the JCB Championship, the Staysure PGA Seniors Championship, and then the MCB Tour Championship in Mauritius to see off the strong challenge of Adilson da Silva in the Order of Merit, finishing 717.6 points ahead of his nearest rival. He earned euro541,177. He's now notched up a total of five wins on the Legends Tour to add to his three DP World Tour wins and another three on the Challenge Tour. On top of the wins, Baker had two runner-up finishes at the WINSTONgolf Senior Open and Italian Senior Open. He was T-3rd at the Jersey Legends
2024 Notes: Played in 15 Legends Tour events with seven top ten finishes. Was 2nd in the Order of Merit, earning euro530,651. Peter would end the week victorious at the Barbados Legends. Back-to-back rounds of 67 started off his week in fine form before a final day 69, which would get him to -10 for the week. It was a score matched by Australian Scott Hend, and the pair would have to go through a play-off. Peter won on the first extra hole. Was 2nd at the European Legends Cup. In the final event of the year won the MCB Tour Championship Mauritius. Played in four Champions Tour events, best finish 11th at the U.S. Senior Open.
2025 Notes: Played in 18 Legends Tour events with nine top ten finishes. Was 2nd in the Order of Merit, earning euro384,93. Won the Costa Navarino Legends Tour Trophy, was T-2nd at the OFX Irish Legends, a shot back of the winner James Kingston.
2026 Notes: Finished T-22nd at the Staysure Marbella Legends.
